An Overview of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon
One of the more specialized models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the G-Class or G Wagon has reached the end of its second generation with the 2021 edition. Fans wouldn’t want too much to be changed on the outside, but under the hood and inside the cabin, things are more exciting than ever. The advancements in road handling and interior design turn the G-Class into the best rugged SUV for a discerning driver. Let’s take a deeper look at the latest G Wagon.
2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Overview
The G Wagon is a long-standing combo of luxury and off-roading thrills. It’s also a practical city SUV, as its refined mechanics and boxy form make it easy to operate in confined spaces. While older models took on more of a military inspiration, the G Wagon now looks at home just about anywhere. It has greater strength than many starting full-size pickup trucks and a much higher standard of comfort and technology than economy SUVs.
G Wagon Trim Levels and Changes
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is available in two trim levels: G 550 and AMG® G 63. Let’s cover the notable standard equipment and optional packages for each trim.
2021 Mercedes-Benz G 550
The G 550 trim level is available with 19-inch eight-spoke wheels, a sunroof, a brush guard, LED headlamps, a prominent stainless-steel bash bar, heated and power-folding side mirrors, a tow hitch, and a rear-mounted spare wheel. Optional features include 20-inch AMG® multispoke wheels, a black brush guard, Night Black Magno exterior elements, and an AMG® style package with bigger fender flares and chrome trim components. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster screen is new for 2021.
For an even tougher appearance, the Professional Line option adds black 18-inch alloy wheels with off-road tires, stone shields in front of the headlights, mud flaps, blacked-out exterior trim, a roof rack, and rear privacy glass. From alternative tires to distinctive paint combinations, you’ll find customization and variety well beyond other SUVs.
2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG® G 63
The AMG® G 63 uses the stronger of the two engines and has most of the same packages and options available on the G 550. Wheel size ranges from 20 to 22 inches in diameter, with sleek chrome complementing gloss or matte black accents. The AMG® Trail package, available on the G 63, recalibrates the off-road driving mode, providing softer damping and more agile trail maneuvers. For 2021, the G 63 gets wireless charging as standard equipment.
New on both trim levels of the 2021 edition, Mercedes added G manufaktur colors and other options for those who like an exclusive, custom appearance. Even without counting these colors, there are over two dozen paint colors available.
G Wagon Performance Specs
AMG® technology is fueled by racing innovations, from reducing friction to using electric-vehicle advancements on combustion engines. The Mercedes-Benz AMG® G 550 uses a 4.0-liter V-8 biturbo engine with 416 horsepower at 5,250-5,500 rpm and 450 pound-feet of torque at 2,000-4,750 rpm. The model can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in only 5.6 seconds and tow up to 7,000 pounds.
On the other side, the G 63 edition uses a handcrafted AMG® 4.0L V-8 biturbo engine. The G 63’s outputs 577 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 627 pound-feet of torque at 2,500-3,500 rpm. The AMG® G 63 SUV can utilize these ratings to hit 60 mph in only 4.7 seconds and tow up to 7,700 pounds.
A Mercedes-AMG® engine begins with cutting-edge technology. Everything from the fuel pressure to the exhaust routing has been designed to speed, heighten, and amplify the driver’s engagement and control. With the G 550, drivers can hit fuel performance ratings of 17 city mpg and 19 highway mpg. For G 63 drivers, that changes to 13 city mpg and 15 highway mpg, good numbers for an off-roading SUV.
G Wagon Driving and Ride Quality
This G class series has a quick and smooth performance that makes any common trip or adventure more enjoyable. Along with its artfully calibrated four-wheel drive and three lockable differentials, practically every measure of its off-road capabilities, from climbing to fording depth, comes out better than those of competitors.
Stability control is an important factor with off-roading vehicles. For either trim level, the same stability enhancements for on-road driving work overtime on the trail. Against rocks, logs, or potholes, other rugged SUVs will have noticeably more bumping and bobbing.
G Wagon Cabin and Comfort
Mercedes Benz’s G Class is a deluxe five-seater outfitted with high-quality amenities and technology. Power-adjusting seats are standard throughout, and the front row has first-class width, space, and positioning. The front console is hefty and wide, a pleasant compliment to the cabin’s refined materials and leather upholstery. Every G Wagon uses a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with a touchpad and rotary knob, which drivers generally find more reliable mid-drive. It also has the same reliable voice command functions and steering-wheel-mounted controls you’d expect in a top-of-the-line SUV.
Many options are available to customize the 2021 G Class’s cabin. With the available Exclusive Interior package, the G-Class can swap out the regular leather for a decadent Nappa replacement with extra trim pieces. A heated steering wheel is available as an individual upgrade, and the Seat Comfort package adds massaging and ventilated front seats.
The standard audio setup is a 590-watt Burmester audio package with 15 speakers. A Wi-Fi hot spot and rear-seat entertainment package are both available, but all models include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, too.
G Wagon Safety and Driver Assistance
The latest G Wagon is as thoroughly equipped with smarter, more reliable safety features than ever, including self-parking assist features. No matter the trim level, drivers get it all, like forward collision warning, front and rear automated emergency braking with front pedestrian detection, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane departure warning.
Mercedes-Benz G Class vehicles are outfitted with cutting-edge technology that promotes better ride quality and faster performance. The 2021 G Wagon, G Class, is a prime example.
