What’s the Difference Between the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and C-Class?
Mercedes-Benz recently made the decision to discontinue the A-class sedan beyond the 2022 model year. However, thanks partly to the longevity and durability of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, there are still many A-class models available for sale. If you’re looking to get a new Mercedes-Benz sedan, one decision you’ll have to make is whether you want an A-Class or a C-Class. At first glance, they may seem similar. There are some significant differences, though, that can make one better for you than the other.
Below, we highlight the biggest differences between the newest versions of these two sedans, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
A-Class vs. C-Class: Size
First, let’s look at the size of these two sedans. They are fairly similar in size, although the C-class is a little larger. The A-Class comes in at 179.1 inches long and 70.7 inches wide, while the C-Class is 187 inches long and 74.4 inches wide. This is most noticeable inside the vehicle, where the rear seats have an extra few inches of legroom (33.9 inches vs. 36 inches).
There’s also an extra inch of shoulder space in the front and more cargo space, with 12.6 cubic feet available in the C-Class compared with 8.6 cubic feet in the A-Class. A few inches here and there may not sound like much, but when you’re inside the vehicle, you’ll likely notice the difference, especially if you’re a taller passenger or typically need extra cargo space.
A-Class vs. C-Class: Performance
Next, there are the performance specs of these two vehicles. While both models use a 2.0L Turbo I-4 engine, the C-Class gets a boost thanks to the inclusion of a 48V mild hybrid system. This means that while the A-Class produces 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, the C-Class can output an increased 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
There are a few other differences between the two models in terms of performance. For starters, the A-Class model comes standard with front-wheel drive, while the C-Class has rear-wheel drive. You can upgrade either vehicle to 4MATIC® all-wheel drive, though. In addition, the A-Class uses a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the C-Class opts for a 9-speed automatic.
In terms of fuel efficiency, these two vehicles are similar. With the base options, the A-Class gets 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 28 mpg. The C-Class, on the other hand, gets 25 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway, for a combined rating of 29 mpg. This makes the C-Class slightly more fuel efficient, and it also has the edge in terms of its ability to deliver a more powerful driving experience.
A-Class vs. C-Class: Luxury Features
Both the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the C-Class come stocked with plenty of advanced luxury features to help create a more enjoyable driving experience. However, there are some key differences. For example, heated seats are an optional upgrade for the A-Class, while they come standard with the C-Class. At the same time, a panoramic sunroof is included as standard on the A-Class, while it’s an optional upgrade over the standard sunroof on the C-Class.
Other features you can expect in either vehicle include the MBUX infotainment system in the center of the dashboard, power front seats and LED ambient lighting. There are so many features, though, that we highly recommend exploring both vehicles in person. This will give you a better idea as to which model comes with each feature and allow you to experience all these features for yourself.
A-Class vs. C-Class: Safety Features
Both the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the C-Class feature some of the most innovative safety features available today. Some of the standard features of the A-Class include:
- Active brake assist.
- Driver attention assist.
- Blind-spot monitoring.
- Traction control.
- Stability control.
- Adaptive braking technology.
In addition, through optional packages, you can add features such as lane departure warning and a backup camera. The C-Class offers similar options, with features such as automated emergency braking and pedestrian detection as standard inclusions. However, many of the other safety features are optional upgrades on the C-Class, such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.
A-Class vs. C-Class: Price
Finally, there’s the price to consider for each vehicle. The starting MSRP for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is $33,950, while the starting MSRP for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is $43,550. This makes the A-Class significantly more affordable than the C-Class. However, both sedans are reasonably priced considering the large number of features included.
Which Version Is Right for You?
Generally speaking, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a better vehicle than the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. However, it also has a higher price tag, so you’ll have to decide whether the upgrades are worth the extra cost to you. If you want the best version of a 2022 Mercedes-Benz, including more powerful performance, extra space, and more modern tech features, you’ll want to explore the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
On the other hand, if you don’t need the extra upgrades and want to save a little money, check out the 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class. You can’t go wrong with either choice, but if you’re going to get a Mercedes-Benz, you should get the one that best suits your preferences.
