History of Mercedes-Benz

July 28th, 2022 by

Founded in 1886, Mercedez-Benz is a well-known and well-loved car manufacturer. All companies have an origin story, and the early makings of Mercedes-Benz reflect the innovation and hard work that are still present in the company today. While the company has undergone several transformations throughout the years, it has remained successful within the automotive industry.

The Early Years (1886-1931)

Carl Benz created the first three-wheeled, self-propelled vehicle in 1886. By 1888, his wife Bertha confidently took the improved automotive on a long drive, paving the way for the inventor to keep honing his craft. By the 1900s, Carl Benz had developed many different cars, trucks, buses, and even race cars that used a multi-valve engine. Around this time, the company began to expand, the famous three-pronged logo was created, and when the world started to take notice of automobiles.

The year 1921 brought the new supercharged engine, which increased the power of the Mercedes vehicles already on the market. Then, in 1931, the company released a fully independent suspension. This allowed each wheel to respond individually, marking a giant leap forward in the industry. However, much of the world was recovering from the first world war and unknowingly preparing for the second war of similar proportions, which impacted the company’s progress.

Recent History (1949-1997)

From 1949 onwards, the vehicles produced by the company only improved. A variety of safety features were added to the cars, like door locks and a rigid framework around passengers. At this time, much of the safety technology introduced by Mercedes-Benz set the foundation for features we still find in vehicles today. In the 1950s, some classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles were produced, namely the W186, W188, and W189. Many versions of these passenger vehicles were available to drivers at the time.

The turn of the century brought in more innovation for the company, which continued to evolve. In 1970, the company introduced the antilock braking system, which revolutionized how vehicles were designed and manufactured. From here, Mercedes-Benz honed in on the production of their cars. New technological, safety, and comfort features set the company up for success as a luxury brand. Some advancements include:

  • 1982: The invention of the multilink suspension increased safety and precision driving.
  • 1985: 4MATIC® all-wheel drive was introduced, making vehicles more versatile.
  • 1991: Mercedes-Benz fine-tuned the air conditioning systems in their vehicles, improving the climate control quality
  • 1995: The Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) was introduced, which improves vehicle control when turning a corner.
  • 1997: The introduction of the smart key, which uses an electronic lock, enhanced convenience for the driver.

The Modern Era (2000-Present)

In the modern era, Mercedes-Benz has been hailed as a luxury car manufacturer with high-performing, high-quality vehicles. The company focuses on comfort, style, and technology in its cars. In 2000, the company began implementing the technology we still see today. Two years later, the company introduced a safety system called Pre-Safe, which was designed to predict a collision and protect the passengers inside the car.

In 2016 and 2017, the company introduced the Car-to-X communication program, which shares information with other vehicles. This information usually pertains to driving dangers, such as slippery roads. As the company has developed, the vehicles it creates have become more refined, classy, and high-tech. In this era of Mercedes-Benz, many models have risen in popularity. Some of the most iconic Mercedes-Benz vehicles include:
