Both models offer a sporty appearance, similar fuel economy, and a low-profile body beginning at similar price points. They vary in style details and available options.

Exterior Features

From the outside, both the 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA and the 2022 BMW 2-Series are roughly the same shape and size, with stylistic details taking the look of each car in a different direction. They are both high-performing subcompact executive cars that are prominent in the marketplace. The CLA has been a player for about nine years, while the second generation of the BMW 2-Series has only been around for a couple of years. Each model uses its distinctive feature to take a different approach to tackling the semi-compact market.

The CLA’s design is based on clean lines and rounded features. More traditionally designed, it has a smoothly styled hood and headlights with a more subtle grille. The design leads to the back bumper and taillights, which narrow to a sleek look. Colors include black, white, yellow, and metallic versions of several colors, including red, gray, and rose. Standard features include 18-inch wheels.

The BMW 2-Series is created with more bold and angular edges in its design. Its front end features a high nose, a bumper with combined air intake, and striking angles and grille design. The back of the BMW gives a wider and more aggressive look, carrying the bold design details from front to back. New taillight designs bring additional bold styling. Colors include new options, including black and gray metallic, that are striking when coupled with new wheel designs.

Interior Features

Like the exterior designs, Mercedes-Benz is taking a more conservative approach with a proven layout interpretation, while BMW’s design favors a bolder scheme. Both interiors provide the solid technology and features demanded by today’s drivers. Size-wise, the interiors are very similar.

The interior of the CLA focuses on two large displays that work together in tandem. A natural voice assistant seamlessly connects three touch interfaces: the screen, steering wheel, and console. You can access your remote starter, door locks, and service information through your smartphone, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and there are four USB ports to keep your passengers charged up. Numerous safety features include active brake assist, blind-spot monitor, crosswind assist, adaptive braking technology, and an electronic traction system.

The CLA is slightly longer, narrower, and higher than the 2-Series. Standard features include the Mercedes-Benz User Experience, or MBUX, an infotainment system with two screens. Many safety features are also standard. The height provides more space in the front seats but a little less space for the back seats compared to the 2-Series. The CLA has more space for luggage, with 16.2 cubic feet of trunk space.

The BMW 2-Series features an interior similar to the 3-Series, with the instrument cluster separate from the infotainment system. Comfortable simulated leather seats with power adjustment blend well with other quality interior components. Standard features include automatic climate control, satellite radio, run-flat tires, and a split-folding rear seat for cargo flexibility. Apple Car Play is standard, but Android Auto is only in the Gran Coupe model.

Drivers of the 2-Series can lock and unlock their car, use remote engine start, and monitor the vehicle’s status from anywhere using their smartphones. Standard safety features include a blind-spot monitor, lane departure, rear cross-traffic alerts, and frontal collision warning. The interior is slightly shorter, wider, and lower than the CLA, and it has slightly less trunk space at 15.1 cubic feet.

Powertrain Options

The CLA and the 2-Series both offer engine and transmission configurations that balance quality, performance, and economy, but the 2-Series features more engine and transmission upgrade options.

The CLA is powered by a 221-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but an all-wheel-drive system is available. The all-wheel-drive option is delivered by the variable-torque 4MATIC® system that shifts power from the front to the rear wheels depending on conditions, enhancing winter and summer driving. Standard shift paddles allow manual control of the dual-clutch transmission.

The CLA’s Dynamic Select drive mode feature has four options: sport, comfort, eco, and a make-your-own individual mode that varies shifting, throttle response, steering, and other performance details. The four-wheel independent suspension system makes taking corners a breeze.

The 2-Series has a 248-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Options include a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, a six-speed manual transmission, and an all-wheel drive. Regarding handling, all models have new technology that controls wheel slips with more sensitivity. Front-wheel-drive models reduce weight and focus on precision steering with less friction. Struts and braces enhance the body’s stiffness and adaptability to whatever the roads and driving conditions throw your way. An almost 50/50 weight distribution enhances responsiveness.

Which Model Works for Me?

Both models offer similar price points, performance, resale value, and options to upgrade to higher powered and optioned variants. Each has distinguishing details in style and options that can help you make your final decision.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA has more affordable top-end options for those seeking to add performance and style for a customized look and feel. It features an elegant-looking interior for all trims. For those with Android devices, the CLA offers more compatibility. Handling is solid, with midrange AMG® models and the CLA 45 all-wheel-drive options offering more aggressive cornering performance.

The BMW 2-Series offers flexibility in the choice of convertible and coupe body styles, a six-cylinder engine, and rear-wheel drive options. Drivers who seek bold options for power, handling, and styling may lean toward the 2-Series. Android Auto integration is available for the Gran Coupe model.
