Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

Produced between 1954 and 1957, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was a sophisticated two-seater sports car with undeniably cool gullwing doors. And as with all Mercedes-Benz performance vehicles, its manufacturing origins developed on the tracks. The 300 SL’s ancestor, the Mercedes-Benz W194, was an endurance racer introduced in 1952. That same year, the W194 took home several racing victories, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring, and the Carrera Panamericana.

Mercedes-Benz had no plans to mass-produce the W194. Still, when the company considered the rapidly expanding car market in the U.S., it decided to manufacture some of its powerful racing coupes for U.S. roads. So, Mercedes-Benz went on to debut the 300 SL at the New York International Auto Show in 1954, impressing American auto enthusiasts.

The 300 SL boasted a water-cooled, 3-liter, overhead cam straight six that achieved 240 horsepower and 217 lb-ft of torque. It shredded asphalt, going from zero to 62 miles per hour in 9.3 seconds, and it achieved a max speed of 146 miles per hour.

Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG® Black Series

We’ve dedicated much attention to this incredible car because of its legendary status in the Mercedes-Benz performance vehicle lineup. The SL 65 AMG® Black Series was in production for only one year, and Mercedes-Benz manufactured a scant 350 models. Back when Mercedes-Benz released them, the public bought up many of the cars before they were even shipped from Germany to the U.S. In 2023, the 2009 SL 65 AMG® Black Series can fly off the auction block for a cool quarter to a half million.

So, what makes this Mercedes-Benz performance car so sought-after by auto enthusiasts with deep pockets? The main reason, besides rarity, is its insane engine. When Mercedes released it in 2009, the SL 65 AMG® Black Series was barely street-legal. That’s because Mercedes-Benz’s performance tuning wing, Aufrecht, Melcher, and Grossaspach (AMG®), tricked out the SL 65’s 6-liter V-12 bi-turbo engine to achieve an absurd 670 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. Combined with performance-tuned turbochargers, sports exhaust, and airflow tubing, the SL 65 AMG® Black Series goes from a standstill to 62 miles per hour in a 3.9-second blink.

And the 2009 SL 65 AMG® Black Series doesn’t lag once it hits that acceleration mark. As a matter of fact, this Benz can fly down roads at nearly 200 miles per hour. A detail that would be terrifying if it didn’t handle so well. This performance vehicle’s carbon-fiber composite body panels and roof lower its weight and center of gravity, while the rear spoiler — also constructed from carbon-fiber composite — elevates at speeds exceeding 75 miles per hour. Clearly, Mercedes-Benz managed to match the power of the SL 65 AMG® Black Series with engineering that delivers an unbelievably elegant performance.

Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC® Sedan

Moreover, the total output capabilities of the EQS 580 4MATIC® are a staggering 516 horsepower and 611 lb-ft of torque. That kind of power will hurl you back in your captain’s chair as you rocket to 60 miles per hour in only 3.7 seconds.

For even more power, the Mercedes-AMG® version of the EQS Sedan ramps up performance capabilities. Mercedes-AMG® managed to tweak the motors on the front and rear axles to up the EQS’s power capabilities. The Mercedes-AMG® EQS has 649 horsepower, over 100 more ponies than the 580 4MATIC®, and it adds nearly the same boost to its torque, maxing out at 700 lb-ft.

All this power shaves 0.7 seconds off the Mercedes-AMG® EQS’s acceleration time, hitting 60 miles per hour in 3 seconds flat. And despite all this power, the AMG® EQS’s hefty weight (5,911 pounds) keeps it firmly planted on the road.
