In May 2022, this Mercedes-Benz sold for roughly $145 million, with proceeds from the sale going toward a global charity started by Mercedes-Benz. There are a few reasons why this particular model is so valuable.

For starters, there are only two such cars available, as they were racing prototypes. Second, these vehicles represent a part of car development history, with the other model currently sitting in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. The Uhlenhaut Coupé features a 3.0-liter straight-eight engine, gullwing doors, and an ultra-light magnesium body, ideal for racing. At the time of its production, it was the fastest road car in the world, capable of topping 180 mph.

1954 Mercedes-Benz W196

Next up, we have the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196. This vehicle sold for over $29 million at an auction back in 2013. This set the record for the most expensive vehicle at the time. The W196 was a Formula One racing car, where it won two Grands Prix championships. One of the reasons that this particular Mercedes-Benz sold for so much is that it’s the only W196 in existence that won multiple Grand Prix. It’s also the only one that’s privately owned, with the other models in the Mercedes-Benz Museum or a warehouse.

The Mercedes-Benz W196 featured a 256 horsepower engine at 8,260 rpm, along with a torsion-rod suspension, a single-joint swing rear axle, and turbocooled Duplex drum brakes. All of this combined to produce one of the best racing vehicles of its generation, with two models finishing first and second in their very first race.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 999 Red Gold Dream

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 999 Red Gold Dream stands out from other vehicles on this list. That’s because its value comes not from superior performance or historical significance, but rather from the materials themselves. In fact, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 999 Red Gold Dream is mostly the same as all other SLR McLarens of the time.

However, this Mercedes-Benz received some custom upgrades from Swiss designer Ueli Anliker. For the 999 Red Gold Dream, Anliker used $5.4 million worth of materials, including actual 24-karat gold. The 999 Red Gold Dream features gold-plated wheels, along with gold in the steering wheel, door sills, headlight surrounds, and even parts of the interior trim.

There’s even 11 pounds of gold dust sprinkled into the 15 layers of paint coating. If that wasn’t enough, the 999 Red Gold Dream also features ruby studs in the wheel nuts and gear shift. With all these additions, it’s no wonder the 999 Red Gold Dream sold for more than $11 million.

1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster

When you think of classic Mercedes-Benz cars, you might picture something similar to the 1937 Roadster. If you find one of these vehicles in good condition, you’re already looking at paying a hefty price. However, a custom 540K Special Roadster established itself in history as one of the most expensive vehicles of all time. Back in 2012, this custom Mercedes-Benz sold for over $11 million.

Originally created for Baroness Josephine von Krieger, this Mercedes-Benz was a high-door, long-tail variant of the Roadster and featured custom upgrades, such as pigskin upholstery and a Telefunken radio. The von Krieger family crest is even painted on the outside of the door, contrasting with the all-black finish. This model sat in a garage for over 40 years after the von Kriegers moved to the United States, after which it received expert restoration before being sold.

1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Roadster

Lastly, the oldest vehicle on this list is the 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Roadster. This is one of the earliest examples of a luxury car, where vehicles were designed with comfort in mind rather than just functionality. This model features some truly unique elements of the time, such as an interior lined with lizard skin and purpleheart wood. The engine also produces 180 horsepower, rivaling some engines of today.

A specific version of the 680S Torpedo Roadster sold for over $8 million in 2013. This version is the only known one to have the short windshield variant. There were only three produced at the time, and the other two are unaccounted for. Lastly, despite being around for close to a century, the 680S Torpedo Roadster had less than 30,000 miles on it — something most people shopping for a used vehicle would love.
