The History of the Mercedes-Benz “G-Wagon”

When we hear the name “Mercedes-Benz”, we often think of its fast-performing sports cars and sedans. This is because Mercedes-Benz has a long history of developing some of the most luxurious and powerful vehicles on the market. Origins of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon

The idea for the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon first came to be back in 1973. At the time, one of Mercedes’ largest shareholders, the Shah of Iran, suggested that the car company make a military off-road vehicle that also appealed to civilians. To meet the specifications necessary for a military vehicle, Mercedes partnered with the manufacturer Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Austria, which had a history of producing military equipment.

Mercedes and Steyr-Daimler-Puch then created a joint company called Galandefahrzeug-Gesselschaft. After several years of producing test models, Mercedes-Benz released the Geländewagen (German for “off-road”) to European markets and the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon was born.

The 1979 first-generation model had three different body styles, including a convertible, a two-door, and a four-door option. In addition, there were three engine options available: a 2.3-liter gas four-cylinder, a 2.4-liter diesel four-cylinder, and a diesel five-cylinder. Some other important features of the new G-Wagon included a climbing ability of up to 80%, a ground clearance of 8.3 inches, a roof carry capacity of 440 pounds, and power steering.

Rise in Popularity

Over the next two decades, the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon received some significant upgrades and continued to grow in popularity. For instance, in the early 1990s, Mercedes-Benz started to produce more luxurious versions of the G-Wagon that it had designed more specifically for civilians. The idea was to create a luxury SUV designed for people looking to take weekend trips.

Other features introduced to the G-Wagon over the years included:

• Cruise control.
• Leather seats.
• Anti-lock brakes.
• Stability control.
• Running boards.
• Interior wood trim.

Part of the reason for the rise in popularity of the G-Wagon was its use in famous situations. For example, in 1980, Mercedes-Benz created a special version of the G-wagon that included a plastic encasing for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Germany. This vehicle eventually earned the nickname The Popemobile. Later, after an attempted assassination, Mercedes-Benz replaced this plastic with a bulletproof enclosure. Another famous example is when a retired executive named Gunther Holtorf traveled 560,000 miles around the world, visiting 215 countries in the process, using his Mercedes Benz G-Wagon.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon Today

The G-Wagon remains strong to this day, although Mercedes-Benz renamed it the G-Class. If you’re interested in getting a modern G-Class, here’s what you can expect:

From the outside, the G-Class continues to look much the same as it did a few decades ago. It still retains that boxy shape and looks like it’s up for practically any adventure. This lavish interior comes with features such as heated seats in the front and rear, leather upholstery, three-zone automatic climate control, and a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster. These are just the standard inclusions though — you can also add a heated steering wheel, massaging front seats, and premium nappa leather upholstery.

The G-Class SUV is also great for passengers, with plenty of headroom and legroom for everyone throughout the cabin. Lastly, there’s 16 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear, which should be more than enough for your next adventure.

Power and Performance

Under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, you’ll find a twin-turbo V-8 engine that produces 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. This makes it more than capable of tackling both difficult road conditions and cruising down the highway. You can also tow up to 7,000 pounds, which is a lot for an SUV of this size. And, of course, all-wheel drive comes standard with all models, giving you more control over difficult terrain. In terms of fuel efficiency, expect the Mercedes-Benz G-Class to get around 13 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway.

Advanced Features

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class comes packed with many of the latest technological innovations. For starters, there’s a 12.3-inch infotainment display through which you can control your preferred media sources and other vehicle features. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, as does a premium 15-speaker Burmester audio system. Optional upgrades include a Wi-Fi hotspot and a rear-seat entertainment system.

As for safety, some of the standard features include:

• Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology.
• Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist.
